Turning Stone Resort’s Sandstone Hollow Golf Course hosted more than 60 children from The First Tee of Syracuse to cap off the program’s summer season. The mission of The First Tee is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The vision of The First Tee of Syracuse is to teach The First Tee Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits; providing the vehicles through which young people can accomplish their dreams, thrive socially, excel academically and athletically, and become productive members of society with integrity, strong family values, and commitment to community. In total this summer, The First Tee of Syracuse worked with a diverse group of about 180 children from the inner city as well as suburban and rural areas. While the program is based at two courses in Syracuse, the visit to Sandstone Hollow was a special way to finish the season. “It was a great experience to come play a different course,” said Jamesville Dewitt sophomore Alanna Jones. “The First Tee gives us a chance to work on our golf game while meeting new people. Some of the biggest life lessons I’ve learned from golf are the importance of patience, courtesy, and honesty.” Robert Dixon, lead coach for The First Tee of Syracuse said, “Coming out to Sandstone Hollow capped off our six week program and it’s a real treat for the kids to play on such a high-quality course at a world-class resort. The First Tee of Syracuse truly appreciates the generosity of the Oneida Nation and the golf staff at Turning Stone.” Turning Stone Resort Assistant Golf Professional Michelle Murphy spent time with the kids on the course, coaching and giving tips. Murphy said, “These kids really appreciate being here. They will remember this forever. Turning Stone is excited to partner with The First Tee of Syracuse and to promote golf for kids and families.” Sandstone Hollow is an official U.S. Kids Golf recognized facility and features the U.S. Kids Golf Family Course Program. Specialized, smaller sized clubs are available that make the game of golf more enjoyable for the whole family. U.S. Kids Golf has also developed a system of Level One and Level Two tee plates for kids and adult beginners. The benefits include a better pace of play, more fun, and a better overall experience.
